While training as a college running back at Division III Mount Union, Scott Panchik was introduced to CrossFit workouts by his father. He’d been doing massive sessions focusing on a few muscle groups per day, and this whole CrossFit thing didn’t sound too difficult, so he thought he’d give it a try.

Scott soon found himself puffing for oxygen after a short CrossFit workout. He continued CrossFit sessions at school and started more advanced training movements by watching videos. However, a series of events in 2009 made CrossFit even more of a family affair. Scott suffered a anterior cruciate ligament tear that year, requiring three reconstructive surgeries and intense rehab. Around that same time, Scott’s younger brothers, Saxon and Spencer, were rehabbing from life-threatening head injuries sustained while hiking, and the Panchik’s would often train together before Scott returned to school.

“CrossFit was a great way for our family to bounce back mentally and physically from my brothers’ accident,” Panchik says.

Scott credits his brothers’ perseverance in motivating himself during training sessions and thinks of his siblings when trying to push through a workout.

“Scott came to us really strong already and with a great motor,” said Regina Page, who wrote Panchik’s programming, while husband Travis coached and trained alongside him. “We just had to fine-tune a lot of his technique on his Olympic weightlifting and a lot of the gymnastics movements to get more efficiency with that stuff. He already had a great set of lungs and he could move weight, so with that he was able to get better and better in a shorter amount of time than someone else.” In 2012 Scott made his mark in the CrossFit Open winning the first workout, which lead to the opportunity to open his own gym, CrossFit Mentality in the NorthEast of Ohio.
