It takes more than just a Level 1 Certificate to run a successful CrossFit affiliate. In this series, learn about the various ways affiliate owners and trainers evolve and plan as they work to lead the fitness industry.

In Part 12, the conversation continues as CrossFit Inc.’s Tyson Oldroyd discusses common programming pitfalls with Pat Burke of MBS CrossFit, CrossFit Verve founders Matt and Cherie Chan, Nicole Christensen of CrossFit Roots, and David Tittle of CrossFit Low Oxygen.

When training like CrossFit Games athletes becomes the goal, health, wellness and longevity become secondary, Christensen says. She compares the Games to the Olympics, pointing out the absurdity of deciding to train like Olympic athletes just because you watched them compete. Many don’t see that same absurdity when they decide to model their training after a top CrossFit Games athlete.

“If I watch the CrossFit Games and I’m like, ‘Hey, I’m going to train like those athletes at the Games starting tomorrow,’ it’s like, ‘OK, cool, that’s great,’” she says.

With CrossFit, one workout per day results in incredible fitness, the group agrees, and very effective programming is available to everyone, Christensen asserts.

“We follow the main-site ( programming on a two-week delay,” she says. “What’s wrong with that? Why aren’t more affiliates doing that?”
